It is a system used by mobile operators around the world to transmit text messages between devices. A single SMS can contain between 70 and 160 characters depending on the type of characters contained.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2 id=\"SMS_history\" class=\"lb-txt-none lb-h3 lb-title\">History of SMS<\/h2>\r\n<div class=\"lb-rtxt\">\r\n\r\nThe development of this technology began in the early 1980s, when a multinational company began working on a standard for sending alphanumeric messages to mobile device users. The first ever message was sent on December 3, 1992. It simply said &quot;Merry Christmas.&quot; By 1993, the service was being offered by operators in Scandinavia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Since then, the popularity of SMS has grown dramatically. In 1995, the average mobile user sent 0.4 messages per month.<sup>1<\/sup>. In 2005, that number had increased to 62 messages per user per month, while in 2015 it had grown to 548 messages per user per month<sup>2<\/sup>Today, it is the most used data service on the planet. It is estimated that, in 2017, 15 million SMS messages were sent every minute. That&#039;s 8,000 billion messages per year.<sup>3<\/sup>!\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h3><\/h3>\r\n<h3><\/h3>\r\n<h3><img class=\"wp-image-16317 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sendapp.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/sms-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"190\" \/><\/h3>\r\n<h3><\/h3>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Sending SMS messages<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<div class=\"lb-rtxt\">\r\n\r\nThere are two ways to send SMS messages: from one mobile device to another, or from a computer to a mobile device. The first method is known as Person-to-Person (P2P). The second is Application-to-Person (A2P). P2P messages are by far the most widely used type of SMS message. Developers, marketers, and business users, however, are much more likely to communicate using A2P messages. The most common way to send A2P messages is through a cloud-based messaging or customer engagement application. These applications typically include additional features beyond sending emails. For example, they include tools that help segment customers into targeted subsets to ensure maximum campaign effectiveness. In other cases, they offer analytics tools that make it easier to visualize engagement.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h4 id=\"SMS_and_customer_engagement\" class=\"lb-txt-none lb-h3 lb-title\">SMS and customer engagement<\/h4>\r\n<div class=\"lb-rtxt\">\r\n\r\nDepending on the use case, SMS messages can be one of the most effective methods for sending urgent information to customers. Studies show that SMS messages have an open rate of 90%, compared to 30% of the open rate.<sup>4<\/sup>. For emails, this value drops to 25%. Furthermore, up to 90%, open SMS messages are displayed within three minutes of receiving the message<sup>4<\/sup>, while only 13.7% of emails are opened within the first hour<sup>5<\/sup>.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h5 id=\"SMS_messaging_and_AWS\" class=\"lb-txt-none lb-h3 lb-title\">SMS and AWS messages<\/h5>\r\n<div class=\"lb-rtxt\">\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/it\/pinpoint\/\">Amazon Pinpoint<\/a>\u00a0it can be used to monitor customer behavior and create customer segments based on this data.
