WhatsApp has a new plan to explain its contentious privacy policy \u2014 the one that\u00a0came under fire<\/a> when users grew concerned the platform would share their messages with parent company Facebook. Moreover, in an announcement on Thursday, the company explained how users can read through the new policy and learn how business and personal messages \u2014 which have different privacy standards \u2014 are handled.<\/p>\n

The new privacy policy primarily concerns messaging businesses on WhatsApp and what parts of your data those businesses have access to. Moreover, most WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, meaning they can only be accessed by the people actually talking. But WhatsApp also lets users message businesses, and those messages aren\u2019t extended the same protections. So the data in business messages can be used for commercial purposes like ad targeting on Facebook, and some of them are also stored on Facebook\u2019s servers. However, WhatsApp\u2019s privacy policy was an attempt to explain that change, but many users interpreted it as WhatsApp comprising the privacy focus it was known for.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the new May 15th launch (moved from February 8th<\/a>), WhatsApp plans to offer users the ability to review this new privacy policy inside its app. So the company already tried to reassure users through WhatsApp\u2019s Status feature<\/a>, but now WhatsApp will include a banner that can be tapped to pull up the explanation of the new policy. WhatsApp users privacy policy. Moreover, the company says it will eventually remind users to read the new policy and accept it to continue using the app as well.<\/p>\n

WhatsApp also notes that businesses pay for the right to use WhatsApp to reach customers, and that\u2019s one of the ways WhatsApp is able to provide its app for free. However, the main features of WhatsApp remain as private as ever. So of course, it\u2019s not as private as some users might think: WhatsApp started sharing some personal information<\/a>\u00a0like phone numbers and profile photos with Facebook in 2016 to improve friend recommendations and ads on the app.<\/p>\n

WhatsApp is obliquely referencing Telegram, an app that, along with Signal,\u00a0seemed to benefit<\/a>\u00a0from the confusion over what was changing in WhatsApp. Telegram\u00a0has dealt with its own criticism<\/a>\u00a0over not enabling end-to-end encryption by default \u2014 and clearly, WhatsApp doesn\u2019t want you to forget that.<\/p>\n

WhatsApp has detailed what will happen to users who don\u2019t accept its new privacy policy in an\u00a0FAQ on its website<\/a>. Secondly, last week, WhatsApp outlined how it would be explaining the new privacy policy to its users<\/a>, in an effort that includes a banner inside the app with its explanation of the new policy.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Facebook-owned messaging service says that it won\u2019t delete any accounts that haven\u2019t accepted the new terms on May 15th. So the users will still be able to accept the new privacy policy after that date.
