AI4TRUST: Fighting Disinformation with Artificial Intelligence
Online disinformation has become an increasingly significant threat, capable of amplifying crises, deepening divisions in society and undermining the health of democracies. The speed with which manipulated or false content, including that generated by artificial intelligence, is created and disseminated represents a growing risk. However, there is a powerful ally to meet this challenge: artificial intelligence itself. This is the objective of the AI4TRUST project.
The fight against disinformation with AI4TRUST
AI4TRUST is a European initiative involving 17 partners from 11 countries, including SkyTG24, and is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme. The goal of the project is to create a secure environment that leverages advanced AI-based technologies to monitor social media and traditional media. This advanced monitoring will help journalists, fact-checkers and policy makers do their jobs more effectively.
The Spread of Online Disinformation
Online misinformation is becoming increasingly pervasive, especially on crucial issues such as health, climate change and social change. The growing amount of online content made available daily makes it extremely difficult to detect and counter false or manipulated news. This new generation of content, also generated by artificial intelligence, spreads at such a speed that it makes it almost impossible for humans to monitor it and react promptly. An example was recently discovered in Italy, where a network of 36 sites used AI to generate unreliable content.
The Key Role of Artificial Intelligence
AI4TRUST aims to leverage artificial intelligence to counter this challenge. The consortium intends to develop hybrid solutions that combine AI with human intervention to mitigate the effects of online misinformation. This system will monitor a wide range of social media and traditional platforms using advanced artificial intelligence algorithms. It will be able to analyze different types of content, including photos, videos and texts, in different languages, detecting possible manipulated or false information. This will allow journalists and fact-checkers to respond more promptly and effectively to misinformation, while reducing the production and dissemination of false content.
The Future with AI4TRUST
AI4TRUST is working to develop an online platform that will provide media practitioners, researchers and policy makers with the tools needed to identify and counter manipulated or false information. This initiative represents a fundamental step in the fight against online disinformation, helping to keep democratic societies informed and aware. With the support of artificial intelligence, AI4TRUST offers an opportunity for more accurate and reliable information.
